High Waist + Stripes

High waist denim and stripes are a 90’s dream! You guys know me, I love the 90’s style and to mix patterns most people would never attempt.
Here I have styled denim shorts with a denim jacket and a crop striped tank to add contrast. My Adidas are always a go-to for more casual looks.
This tank is from Rue 21. Although Rue 21 doesn’t have this tank in stock anymore and I tagged a similar one from Forever 21, I purchased mine at Dirt Cheap. I find my style inspiration and then put it together with cheap finds, like this one.

Uninvited

Uninvited by Lysa TerKeurst

A book review.
Let me start off by saying that I’ve never considered myself a huge reader. In my family, that would be my mom. She is the one who originally purchased this book for me.  I was hesitant about reading it at first, but after chapter one I was hooked and it turned out being one of the best books I’ve ever read. It truly made a difference for me in having a positive outlook in all situations I encounter. This helped me overcome fear and rejection while learning to live loved.
The book opens with the motto ‘living loved and loving yourself’ even with all of the quirks and strange features that make you, YOU. If you’re like me, I am an awful over-thinker and I embarrass myself on the reg. Through this book, I have learned to love myself for who I am and never try to be someone I’m not. At the end of the day everyone just wants to be around someone who is real, right?

Some chapters discuss letting go of your well planned future and accepting that God’s plan might be different than what you had in mind.
Towards the middle it discusses rejection and why it hurts so much and how to deal with it.
I even contemplated my blog for quite some time because I was scared of what people are going to think. I knew some would have negative comments and I wasn’t sure if I could deal with the rejection after putting so much effort into something I loved. I quickly realized rejection can enforce negative thoughts about myself, but it was up to me to not let it steal my joy. So, here we are, blog and all.
Towards the end of the book, it states how to stop running from pain and start embracing it. Only by doing this, will you truly be able to forgive and move on from situations/people, which have hurt you.
It also covers topics on dealing with problems in a social media driven society, jealousy, and the enemy’s plan against you.
It is definitely a book I recommend for everyone to read. I give it 5 stars.

Top 10 Places to visit in Manhattan

Travel

1. Meatpacking District

The meatpacking district is one of my favorite places in the city. This area has some of the best shops, restaurants, and rooftops for nights out. There’s just something about walking the cobblestone streets and being right on the Hudson River that makes you feel like true New Yorker. It is also home to the Chelsea Market and Diane Von Furstenberg’s store/home.

2. The Highline

The Highline is located in the meatpacking district. It is a 1.45-mile-long urban park that was formerly used as the railroad from 1934 until 1960, when the southern section was demolished. It over looks the streets of Manhattan and the Hudson River.

3. Hudson River

The Hudson River encompasses both sides of the island. I am partial to the west side more than the east. This quickly became my favorite place to run or to sit and take in everything about this amazing city.

4. The West Village

The West Village is full of character. Be sure to keep your eyes out for the celebs in the area. Stay here too long and you just might fall in love with the charm and style of this part of Manhattan.

5. Bleeker St

This is one of my favorite streets in the West Village. Bleeker is full of adorable buildings, fun shops, and home to the original Magnolia Bakery (which is located on Bleeker and 11th St.).

6. Washington Square Park

Washington Square Park, located right in the heart of the NYU campus, is one of the most beautiful places to see. It’s known for the incredible Washington Square Arch and the fountain.

7. Soho

Soho is my favorite place to shop in the city. Some might say 5th avenue, but not me.  The streets of SoHo are home to unique boutiques, trendy chain stores, such as Zara and Top Shop, and upscale chains, like Louis Vuitton and Chanel.

8. Bethesda Fountain

This Fountain is found near Loeb’s boating house in Central Park. Although Central Park has tons of beautiful places, this fountain is by far my favorite. Maybe it’s all the beautiful features or maybe it’s the ducks and rowboats in the background. Either way, it’s absolutely stunning. For you Gossip Girl lovers, this is where Chuck and Blair tied the knot.

9. Bryant Park

This park is a hidden gem. I believe it gets overlooked when it comes to “must see places in the city.”  In the winter the park serves as an ice-skating rink and in the summer it serves as grounds for lawn movies. The lawn is overlooked by the New York Library. It’s also known for the Le Carrousel and The Josephine Shaw Lowell Memorial Fountain.

10. Top of the Empire State Building

As a little girl, I dreamed of moving to New York City and doing an internship in fashion. I grew up in a very small town in Alabama. When I dreamed of NYC, I dreamt of seeing all the lights at night, being on a rooftop and looking across all of Manhattan. I wish more than anything someone could have got a picture of my face the first time my eyes glanced across that skyline, 102 floors up on the top of the Empire State Building. I was amazed. It was everything I thought it would be. That, my friends, is how I fell in love with the city.

Bitter to Better

Lifestyle

 Bitter to Better

Have you ever tried to warn someone about a friend you know really well and it end up causing more harm for yourself than good? Or maybe you have dated someone who puts on a mask for the outside world, but you feel like only you saw the true colors? Or Or, maybe there is someone who has never talked to you, but they have resentment towards you because of what one person said?
I have found myself in all of these situations several times. You can get so caught up in trying to tell other people what awful things people have put you through. I found myself saying well “she did this” and “he did that” a lot.
I kept getting so upset every time I would hear someone say “she so nice”, “he just seems like such a chill guy”, “ I could never see him/her being like that” and so on.
Every time I would hear this it would make me so angry. Even though I knew these sayings were completely false, I couldn’t say, oh no your wrong, see he/she has done this to me. No matter how long you know people and what they have done, others will never understand until they are in the same situation.
I made several mistakes trying to tell people my thoughts and warn them of everything they had put me through. There was actually even a point where every time I heard their name I wanted to burst out all the negative things they had done. I wanted so badly for others to see what I had gone through.
Then one morning, everything had changed.  I realized I didn’t necessarily want to rekindle these friendships or relationships. I didn’t miss all the fighting and heartbreak it caused me. I didn’t want revenge on them in any way, nor did I want them back in my life. I was just bitter, very bitter. So bitter it was consuming all my thoughts and energy. I had become consumed with trying to get other people to see what I saw.
That was all I wanted was for people to see how I was treated. It was like I wanted a trophy from others seeing how much I went through and that I was the actual better one in this situation. Not saying I was always the good one in all situations I have encountered, but in those where you honestly feel like you did all you could and you have no idea why this person would do this to you. So yeah, I wanted a trophy, and a huge one at that.
But then I thought did everyone believe Jesus was Jesus when he parted the waters and helped the sick and blind? No, they didn’t. They hung him on a cross with nails in his hands and thorns on his head. They laughed and said mean comments. Most yelled “he saved others, but he can’t save himself! Why can’t you get down.” But

Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.

  • Luke 23:34
See here I am thinking I deserve a trophy. Why? Why do I deserve a trophy when the King of Kings and Lord of Lords never got one, instead he got thorns and nails.
The bible also says

“My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God.”

  • 1 Corinthians 4:4-5
Even though our conscience is clear and we know what the other has done to us, that doesn’t mean we are to judge them for it and go talk badly about what they have done. He even says he will bring to light what is hidden in darkness, meaning he will eventually spread the truth on what you’re dealing with for all to know.
I finally realized I could not hold on to such bitterness anymore for what I had been through. I could not waste anymore time or energy on trying to get people to see things through my eyes. Being so bitter was keeping me from being focused on what God needed me to do, which is exactly what the devil wanted. All those bad thoughts had been planted by the devil. That day on my drive to school, I realized was the last day I would allow bitter situations to consume my thoughts and steal my joy.
A really good friend of mine told me, “Erin, all people’s true colors will eventually reveal themselves, you can’t force anyone to see them.”
Boy, she was right. Although bitter thoughts still come to mind, I am better.

“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Favorite Eats in New York City

Travel

1.  Polo Bar

This restaurant is owned by Ralph Lauren. You are greeted by his signature style of navy + green plaid and polo gear, as soon as you walk in the front door. I have tried the polo bar crab cakes and roasted chicken, but the prime filet mignon was no doubt the best.
1 E 55th St, New York, NY 10022.

2. Dos Caminos

I stumbled upon this restaurant while out exploring one afternoon. Dos Caminos offers anything from bottomless drinks & mexican style food at brunch. This restaurant has 5 different locations throughout Manhattan.

 3. Loeb’s Boathouse

If you want brunch with a view, then Loeb’s Boathouse is your place. It’s hands down my favorite place for brunch. Located on a lake in Central Park. The atmosphere here is one of the best in the city.  Also, several movies and TV shows have been filmed here– Sex and the City, When Harry Met Sally,  and 27 Dresses, just to name of a few.

 4. Black Tap Craft Burgers and Beers

From shakes topped with cotton candy, huge cookies, and pieces of cake, they do it all. The shakes aren’t the only amazing item on the menu either, the burgers aren’t too shabby. Lucky us, Black Tap has locations in Soho, Meatpacking, and Midtown. Although there was a wait, I think it was well worth it.

 5. Donut Pub

Another one of my favorite sweet shops is the Donut Pub, located in the West Village. My roomie and I actually stumbled upon this shop one night and we immediately fell in love. The Donut Pub offers tons of flavored donuts, with their signature flavor being the chocolate dipper. My favorites were the Oreo and chocolate glazed with sprinkles. My roomie’s was the French cruller. Since the pub was only a block away from our apartment and stayed open 24 hours, we became quite the frequent visitors. This is a must have while in the city.

(212) 929-0126

 6. Crispin’s

If you’re a sucker for some good Italian, this is the place. My favorite dish is the lobster ravioli. YUM! This restaurant is located in Hell’s Kitchen in Manhattan.

 7. Serendipity 3

Serendipity, a tourist favorite, is known for their frozen hot chocolate. And trust me, it does not disappoint. While they are largely known for their desserts, be sure to take a look at the selection of entrees they have to offer. This restaurant was also featured in the movie, Serendipity.
225 E 60th St, New York, NY 10022

 9. Cornelia Street Café

This cute and quaint café is located in Greenwich Village. It is full of character and serves some amazing food. The night my friend Randa & I went the special was steak. It was amazing! We both cleaned our plates! In addition to their amazing menu, they also have an underground room where people read poems, sing, and offer open mic nights.
29 Cornelia St, New York, NY 10014
(212) 989-9319

 10. Shu Han Ju

Of course I had to save my favorite place for last. Ask any of my close friends, I talk about this place all the time. I’ve often said, “I will fly to NYC, eat at Shu Han Ju and fly back if I could.” Located in the West Village, you must try this restaurant if you’re a fan of Chinese food. Make sure to try out my personal favorite, the general tso’s chicken and pork steamed dumplings.

You’re Hot then You’re Cold

Style

If you are like me and live in Alabama, you know how unpredictable the weather can be, especially while the seasons are transitioning. I’ve always struggled with being fashion forward and not being too hot or too cold. Well, here’s my solution. You know all those old sweaters you have hanging in your closet that you thought you were done wearing until next season? Pull them to the front of your closet and pair with denim shorts. Top this off with a belt and booties and you’re ready!
